Some plastic materials are hygroscopic. They hold water molecules similarly to a sponge.
These plastics must always be dried before they are processed. Otherwise the molding process will result in sub-standard parts. Streaks and insufficient strength can be traced back to a lack of or insufficient drying.
Criteria for the drying process:
The residual humidity
... is the moisture content that remains after the material has been dried. The permitted level of maximum residual humidity varies according to the material.
The drying time
... is the time in which the material is dried to a required level.
The drying temperature
... is the temperature at which the plastic granulate is dried.
The holding time
... is the total time that the granulate spends in the dryer, from filling to conveying.
Dry air
... is warm air from which the moisture has been removed. As warm air absorbs more water than cold air, the moisture is drawn out of the granulate.
The dew point
... in plastic granulate drying is the temperature at which moisture condenses out of the air onto the material. The lower the dew point, the dryer the air.
